Muxtape, A Super Simple Way To Share Mixtapes

Muxtape is a wonderful new service created by Justin Ouellette that makes it really easy to create mixtapes, including a unique link that you can give out to friends.

The Best Hack Ever

Now I have hacked a lot of items. Xbox, psp, tivo, Bell PVR and so on. But this hack on the ipod touch couldn't have gotten any easier if it had come un-locked from Apple.

I found this from one of my favorite hacker blogs, Lifehacker. Jailbreak Your iPhone or iPod Touch with One Click was really helpful, however as with any hack there are a couple things you have to figure out for yourself.

Open jailbreakme.com in Safari on the ipod touch and click the jailbreak icon. A file will load, then Safari will close. Then you will have to do a hard reset (on ipod touch this is done by holding the top button and the front button together for 5 secs). Once you do so you will see a new icon for the installer program. Open that and you may need to update the installer. The first package to install is under the Sources folder, called Community Sources. This add other sites where the installer checks for programs that you may want to install. Also under the system folder, install BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH. These are needed to get some programs to run correctly.

Bit Torrent is your friend

I see a number of my friends complaining that they missed their favorite show this past week. At this point Bit torrent is your friend. Lifehacker did a great round up of what bit torrent is.

You need a bit torrent program. My favorite is utorrent. Install it.

The sites the Lifehacker article mentions for bit torrent links are public and not the safest nor the fastest.

The best one for TV shows I have found is eztvefnet.org

It is also public but really fast. The site is organized by day. Find your missing show. Lets say Heroes. Click the link Heroes S02E01 HDTV XviD-XOR. A window pops up and asks what you want to do with the file. You want open it with utorrent. Click the arrow in the drop down box then other find the utorrent program you just installed.

This file is in xvid format, you may need a player to play the file. VLC media player multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...)

Are they insane??? Puremobile is trying to capitalize in a big way on Canadians not having access to the iphone. But come on $2300 over and above the cost of an iphone to get it hacked is a bit much.

According to Hack the iphone's web site its no harder to mod then a console. So maybe its worth $200-300 to mod and another $200 to get it in Canada. That's it.

They do have a video of it running on Fido.

New Show - Chuck

Meet Chuck Bartowski. He's your run of the mill computer whiz working for Buy-More with is equally nerdy friends all while longing for the woman of his dreams. Now Chuck has unwittingly become the government's most powerful weapon and the fate of both the country and the world now lie in his hands. A Buy-More day job and saving the world are all in a day's work for Chuck.

I liked it. Much better then Reaper, as a slacker fights evil. But as with most tv/movie depictions of computers, it was bit over the top. I loved how Buy More was Best Buy and the Nerd Herd was the Geek Squad.

TV is not dead, the medium is

If you are Canadian you have probably seen the public service ad that talks about Marshall McLuhan:"The Medium is the Message". It means that the form of a message (print, visual, musical, etc.) determines the ways in which that message will be perceived.

So are TV shows perceived differently if they are received by another medium?

For the last two summers, new shows that have been premiering in the fall have shown up on bit torrent servers. For a true fan of TV this is like getting your cake and eating too. I get to see new show before most people and I get to watch them on my own schedule.

I love TV. I always have. I can remember being 7 or 8 and getting up after my parents went to bed to watch Hart to Hart. So getting shows whenever and wherever I want is like Christmas morning everyday of the week.

So my perceived difference would be the freedom that the internet allows me to get TV shows, movies, music and news when and how I want.
